Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) and Radicalization in Eurasia
Monograph
By Dr. Nalin Kumar Mohapatra
The Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) is pursuing a radicalisation policy in Eurasia (Post-Soviet space), thus posing a substantial threat to the peace and security of this strategically significant region. TJ’s efforts to impose mono ideology are creating an ideological dissonance in the socio-political processes in the Eurasian region. This, in turn, is contributing to a breeding ground for the growth of extremism, radicalism, and terrorism and accentuating the threat to regional security. The existence of different “conflict-ridden regions” within Eurasia, like Chechnya, Dagestan, Nagorno Karabakh, and Ferghana, is also providing an opportunity for TJ to proliferate by taking advantage of the volatility. While looking at the role of TJ in Eurasia, the role of external state actors like Pakistan and Turkey (Iran and Saudi Arabia in the 1990s) and non-state actors like Taliban, Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP) and other Jehadi and radical terrorist groups in promoting such turbulence in this region also cannot be ignored. In this context, there is a need for growing cooperation among India, Russia and Central Asian countries to checkmate the threat of radicalism and terrorism.
